A New Creative Toy :)

by Susan Partlan on December 20, 2011

Hello, I didn’t plan to post till New Year’s Day but we have fallen in love with our new camera, a Canon Rebel 2Ti EOS 550D and wanted to share some shots.

Paula and Susan and Catherine inspired us.

There was just enough net funds in the bank account of my pathetic business to cover the excellent Costco price, so we had a Santa moment and put that sucker in the cart next to the giant bag of cat food.

We took a trip to Oakland to purchase some silk from Piedmont Fabrics for this cardigan.

My silk choices look very similar to the ones pictured above. I would show you but the fabric is still line drying from the preshrinking.

We couldn’t resist trying some stealth photography in Piedmont.

Jeans and sneakers rule but these ladies looked festive.

Martin cut a figure in his hat.

i think she's looking at the scarf, don't you?

The Mondrian scarf always gets attention.

Indoors you can see details like this.

And in this lighting I don’t mind Martin’s candid shots.

Night photography is now a possibility.

i got this cool paisley scarf for $10 at the church thrift store

This is not a style shot. I thought I’d grabbed the large Eileen Fisher ponte pants to wear while my medium ones line dry but grabbed the medium short cropped pants instead. Nevermind. I never left the house today.

The white converse laces were looking dingy so I changed them out for the black ones that came as an alternate pair.  It gave me ideas. Different colored laces! Different colored sneakers! I feel cool just thinking about these Spring 2012 possibilities.

Warning: the remaining shots are from the old Canon point and shoot.

Remember that red charmeuse top? I realized that it says only one thing: Christmas!

Not really an every day top to wear with jeans. Disappointed!

Martin ordered this 1950s shirt pattern, redesigned that sucker six ways to Sunday until it fit perfectly, and voila!

Look at the gorgeousness.

the perfect shirt

No person in their right mind would spend the amount of time Martin did making sure that the yolk would lie on his back in a perfect horizontal line.

Bravo!

I  love the French cuffs, and the pleating!

And my sweetie thinks he is not an artist.

Happy festivities everyone!

Love the whole post. The “out and about;” the shots with the new camera; and yes she was totally looking at your scarf…

I hope you and Martin have a happy Christmas and wonderful holiday Susan.

Wow!! GREAT shots, great scarves, and I couldn’t be more impressed with Martin’s shirt. That’s some real skill. And aren’t these DSLR’s just amazing??

Hi Susan, I know, Martin’s sewing skills are intimidating! And the DSLR camera is beyond amazing. I keep handling it like it’s a new born baby — such a precision instrument.

Terri December 20, 2011 at 9:20 pm

Oh, oh, oh–what a wonderful present to yourself…and the camera will capture loads of wonderful moments as you grow comfortable with it. I am amazed at Martin’s shirt and will likely share it with K. (my DH), who often threatens to haul out “his” sewing machine. Happy holidays. I should be back at it soon.

Hi Terri, I’ve missed you and am glad to hear you’ll be blogging again soon. That would be so cool if your DH got into sewing!

Wait a sec…Martin sews?! And totally rocks at it :-) I haven’t yet made a proper shirt with cuffs, too afraid of all the details.
You guys look sweet on the candid pics. I hope now with the new toy, we’ll see more pictures of you both and your trips on your blog.
Happy Christmas!

You’re able to take some amazing photos with that camera!

I love the Mondrian scarf; you look so chic in it. And those cuffs on Martin’s shirt– Wow!

Reply

Susan T. December 22, 2011 at 9:43 am

Hello Ms. M, the camera is kind of addictive, I can see we’ll need to learn photo editing skills pretty quickly or we’ll be buried in gzillions of photos.

I’m so glad you like the Mondrian scarf and Martin’s cuffs. I can’t get over the cuffs myself.

So much going on here — lovely tree, fabulous new camera, your Mondrian scarf, paisley (I love paisley too), but I’m sorry, they’re all eclipsed by that shirt! It’s astonishingly gorgeous! And he made it?! Wow! And Wow again!

Susan T. December 22, 2011 at 9:44 am

Hello Mater, paisley is pretty, I know, and you’re right Martin’s shirt steals the show!

“cat food and cameras” What a innovative shopping list!
Ah I really see the difference a good camera can make now, I just use my iPhone, I’ve always found cameras to be too technical for me , hubs can’t work one either, our brains aren’t wired that way. And oh the joy of night photography .

Merry Christmas Susan!

Reply

Susan T. December 24, 2011 at 9:45 am

Hi Tabitha, I promise the Canon Rebel DSLR is really easy to use — it has a fully automatic mode that does all of the technical work for you and takes great pictures. But I understand not wanting to hassle with gadgets :).

We’ll definitely be taking more night pictures in the coming weeks.

Merry Christmas to you too!

Martin is a knockout in that hat. Trés cool.

As for the camera – Fabulous! How wonderful to be able to shoot anything at all with any kind of crazy lighting that’s impossible to capture with a digital camera. It’s been tough getting used to all the limitations after my old-time nikons, which have been gathering dust for ages. (Anybody want to buy a non-digital nikon system?)

The one thing I do especially love about my cheapie digital is the light weight. Can carry it everywhere without fracturing shoulders left and tight.

Reply

Susan T. December 26, 2011 at 10:42 am

Hi Pat, you’d be surprised how light the Canon Rebel DSLR is, nothing like the “tank” weight of older models. I walked all around San Francisco with it hanging around my neck and didn’t even notice the weight.

Lisa December 25, 2011 at 9:40 pm
